Whether it’s a wine and cheese picnic, a finger food affair, or as a picnic appetiser, these prosciutto-wrapped figs with goats cheese and crisp arugula are a picnic favourite.

Plate of prosciutto rolls stuffed with figs and goats cheese.

One of our favourite tips for picnics is keeping it simple but that doesn’t mean you can’t be fancy.  These delightfully salty, sweet picnic appetisers are about as simple as it gets and will be sure to always impress.

Add these prosciutto rolls to a cheese platter or an antipasto plate. Or, serve as a side to a hearty salad such as our potato and broccoli salad with fresh bread for an easy yet classy picnic.

Much like our grilled pear and blue cheese appetiser, we love the elegance and simplicity of this delicious little picnic starter. Best of all, you can make these prosciutto rolls well in advance – even the day before. They will keep well in a covered container in the fridge.

Substitutes/ Variations

If figs are not in season, you could use sliced dried figs or rehydrate dried figs. You can also use a jar of fig preserves but look for a quality preserve or spread so it is not too sweet or jammy.

You can also substitute rolled goats cheese with spreadable goats cheese.

Salty prosciutto, sweet figs, creamy goat cheese and some added crunch with fresh arugula leaves – these prosciutto rolls make perfect picnic finger food that will be sure to impress.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 slices prosciutto (not too thin)
  • 6-8 large fresh figs (10-12 if small)
  • 1 Roll goats cheese approx. 4 ounces (you can use spreadable goats cheese)
  • 1 Packet arugula leaves
  • 1 pinch sea salt cracked pepper
  • 1 pinch cracked pepper

Instructions

  1. Carefully separate a slice of prosciutto being careful not to tear it and lay it flat on a cutting board.
  2. Cut a fig into quarters lengthwise.
  3. Cut a slice of goats cheese and place at the top of the prosciutto slice. 2 slices if needed to cover the full with of the prosciutto. If using spreadable cheese, carefully spread along the entire length of the prosciutto slice.
  4. Place 2 quarters of the figs on top of the cheese (4 if using small figs).
  5. Lay arugula leaves in front of the figs and cheese leaving some tips to overhang the edge.
  6. Sprinkle with a little sea salt and pepper
  7. Carefully roll the prosciutto tightly without squeezing the ingredients out or tearing the ham.
  8. Repeat until you have rolled all the prosciutto slices.
  9. You can serve immediately but a little time in the fridge before serving will allow them to set a bit.Ingredients laid for prosciutto rolled figs with goats cheese.

Notes

You can substitute fresh figs with slices of dried fig or rehydrated dried figs.

Goats cheese spread can also be used instead of a goats cheese roll.
